I am writing this as the glorious summer weather has broken with a vengeance and the rain is lashing my windows.  Most of the Rotarians have had a summer break, including another memorable trip to Sardinia led by Past President Pam.  Malling Rotary has been in action, helping with the East Malling Picnic in the Park event in June.  As a result of the contribution in manpower that the Club provided Rotarian Liz, who is also on the organising committee for the Picnic, recently presented the Club with a cheque for £150 which will be distributed among our charities.

In August the club held an event for Rotarians and friends which consisted of a treasure hunt, followed by a strawberry tea with the opportunity to try clay pigeon shooting.  This was well attended despite being high holiday season, and was great fun.  No one got too lost on the treasure hunt route which meandered around parts of Kent with which most of us weren’t too familiar. The weather was lovely and the day was one to remember.  A huge thanks to those who worked hard to make the day a success and so enjoyable for us.

Our next event is the quiz on the 20th October at Grange Park School in Wrotham at 7 for 7.30.   The quiz is always a great social event while raising funds for our charities.  Everyone is welcome - if you don’t have a team you will be assigned to a friendly table.  Bring drinks and snacks and enjoy the evening!

This is rapidly followed by World Polio Day on October 24th.  Rotary internationally raises funds to end Polio and this is matched, dollar for dollar by the Gates Foundation (Bill and Melissa Gates of Microsoft).  Polio is a dreadful disease which is so nearly eradicated that only Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan still report a few cases every year or so.  Wherever it is found, it represents a risk for all of humanity.   Our club has decided that the funds raised at the quiz will be donated to this cause, and of course, thanks to the generosity of the Gates Foundation, those funds will be doubled.

Finally,  don’t forget the Abba evening with ABBA Chique on March 16th at East Malling Village Hall.  This promises to be a really good evening out.

New members are welcome to join us at one of our meetings.  Feel free to contact me at rcomalling@gmail.com so that I can book your meal if you are planning to come.
